Crankbox Obeys: A Song Every Wednesday
“A Lover Listens”, based on Gabi L.’s suggestion, “Storytime”. I hear a bit of Decemberists in it.
Next week we’ll write a song about one of Dylan’s D&D campaigns, on Heather T.’s suggestion. It’s the last Crankbox Obeys! I’d say it’ll be a challenge. Two weeks from now, Crankbox Freelance begins. Check the video for details! One thing it means, though — no more suggestions. From now on, Crankbox paves its own way.
Reblog from Monday, here it is again, and still sweet.

Why am I reposting this song?
Well, because it’s good… and:
You have only about an hour before you can get in the very last Crankbox Obeys suggestion! Anything goes. What will it be?
Do you like blues? Do you like hugging? Are both of those things for cool people? Here’s Crankbox Obeys 50, called “My Baby Holds Me”, and it takes those ingredients and makes a party out of them. Based on Sharlena C.’s suggestion of “a really good hug”.
Check us out next week, we’ll write about Gabi L.’s callback suggestion of “storytime”.
Next week is your last chance to submit a suggestion before the Crankbox Obeys series is over! Make the last song a good one — we’re going all out and giving you free rein on the last suggestion, so make it whatever you want! What should our last Crankbox Obeys song be?
Don’t miss your chance to suggest for the last Crankbox Obeys! Also don’t miss your chance to listen to this song, we had a BLAST recording it.

When Youtube user Omegafilming asked us to write about his plans to “build a grand fortress atop a hill”, we decided to go all out. What you see here is a saga in march time, and we’re confident it has all of the intrigue and gross blood and guts necessary to firmly grasp your attention.
We also pulled some historical names out, so I’ll take this moment to clarify what’s real and what isn’t!
“Sir Conrad” was the name of a Teutonic knight (a German order), and Bartenstein was a real place that was really besieged by the Prussians during the Great Prussian Uprising of 1260-1274. Aside from that, however, most of the events here are fictional, and I’d say not nearly as cool as the real events: the Teutons, after a long siege, actually managed to escape by way of a pretty ingenious plan! The fortress contained a church, whose bells rang every day. They decided one day not to ring the bells, and instead to lie low on the parapets. When the Prussians came to investigate, they ambushed them and fired down on them from the castle walls! They managed to execute this plan three times, each time making the Prussian army warier before putting phase two into effect: In the middle of the night, they all snuck out and headed towards the nearest fort (I believe Konigsberg), leaving only one blind old man to ring the church bell. By the time the deception was discovered, they were several days ahead of their pursuers!
Way cool history stuff, you guys! Our next tune is going to be about something comfortable: “A really good hug”, as suggested by Sharlena C. As if that isn’t cool enough, you can still choose the content of our next song! In fact, we’d like you to re-suggest something from the past year that we haven’t picked! Your own suggestion, someone else’s, whatever you like! What suggestion SHOULD we have picked?
Last chance to put in your suggestion for Crankbox Obeys 51! Give us a suggestion that we never used over the past year!

Reblog for those who missed it on Thursday - here’s our military saga of the siege and fall of Bartenstein (almost entirely fictional in its account). Take a listen and send us an Ask with your suggestion for our next one (see above).
We take inspiration from Jonathan Coulton on that front, and especially from They Might Be Giants, who can take virtually anything, in any style, and make it into a catchy song. We have a lot of respect on that front.
